Community Involvement Grows Under Project Green Lungs

Dikasuna Nature Conservation Inc. (DNC) is deepening community participation in its Project Green Lungs initiative through local-led nursery and tree planting activities across the Sinasina-Yonggomugl District.

The project continues to empower landowners and households to establish their own community reforestation sites using native tree species provided by DNC.

The Project Green Lungs tree nursery and tree planting involve local communities. They reach out to interested groups and only those who have land clear the grass and dig holes themselves. We supply the tree seedlings for them to plant and develop their own area into a community reforestation site.”

The approach ensures that communities take ownership of each site, contributing labour while DNC provides technical support and native seedlings from its nurseries.

This method helps spread environmental awareness, builds responsibility, and strengthens partnerships between conservationists and villagers.

Project Green Lungs continues to focus on restoring degraded land, improving biodiversity, and increasing forest cover through the planting of native species such as Dame-Moge and Emmey n Awkola.

Papua New Guinea’s local reforestation projects are crucial to reversing the effects of deforestation, and Dikasuna’s model shows how communities can lead sustainable environmental change.
