Dikasuna Nature Conservation Inc. has named Mr. Kiap as its Volunteer of the Year, recognising his unwavering dedication and hard work since the organisation’s establishment in 2020.

Kiap has been a full-time volunteer from the beginning, contributing his time and energy to tree planting, weeding, gardening, and keeping the Dikasuna Nature Park clean.

“He is a role model volunteer who gave all his heart to work for Dikasuna,” the organisation said. “He is a workaholic who never gives up, even in times of crisis. He survives and works with a smile.”

Born in Hela, Kiap married a woman from Simbu on the late 90’s and moved to Simbu to live with her people. Now he plays a pivotal role in Simbu’s climate action and sustainability.

Kiap explained how he started volunteering 2021..

“I was walking through the bushes one afternoon and saw a young man alone and clearing a patch in the forest. I stopped and helped him. After a few hours we finished and I went home. The next day I walked through the same bush and saw him working again. I stopped and helped. Then I came the next day, and the day after that and now I come everyday. It is his (Kalale’s) continuous effort that keep me coming everyday.”

Kiap continues to dedicate his life to supporting conservation and community work. His consistency, humility, and service have made him an example to other volunteers across the province.

“This conservation has given me much peace, and fulfilment in my life. What Dikasuna is doing is the first of its kind I’ve seen and I want to be a part of this great change.” Kiam said.

Leaders at DNC said Kiap’s recognition reflects the importance of volunteerism in community-based conservation.

“Volunteers are the backbone of our success,” Project Manager, Philip Kaupa says..

Papua New Guinea’s environmental movement relies heavily on volunteers, particularly in rural areas where projects depend on community support. DNC’s recognition of Kiap aims to encourage more citizens to join hands in protecting nature.
