Dikasuna Nature Conservation Inc. (DNC) is expanding its restoration work at the GOLBA Protected Area, focusing on collecting and replanting native tree species from the remaining forest to revive degraded areas.
GOLBA was chosen as a protected area because it is the last remnant forest belonging to the Sipaku Clan in Dika. The site holds significant ecological and cultural value for the community.
DNC aims to collect native tree seedlings from the remaining forest and restore the degraded parts of this forest. This adds value to our overall conservation work because GOLBA already has a rich population of native plant habitats.”
The restoration process will ensure that endangered and culturally important plant species are preserved for future generations while improving the health of the forest ecosystem.
The nursery training supporting this work is fully sponsored by the PNG–UNDP Biodiversity and Climate Fund (BCF), enabling DNC and local communities to gain technical skills in seed collection, nursery management, and reforestation.
“This training strengthens our ability to manage GOLBA sustainably and to expand our conservation work throughout the district,” Project Manager Philip Kaupa says.
Community participation continues to be a cornerstone of DNC’s success, with landowners and youth volunteers joining in mapping, nursery work, and forest rehabilitation.
Papua New Guinea’s remaining forests are vital for biodiversity and community livelihoods, and projects like GOLBA show how traditional landowners can lead modern conservation efforts.
